Customer Service 101

I had a very interesting conversation yesterday with someone I met while placing a real estate ad (I will call him Matthew). We were talking about Vancouver …. beautiful Vancouver…. and how fortunate we were to live and work here. Our conversation took a turn when we were discussing about our individual travels to the east (Toronto) and to the south (the States). Matthew expressed that there is just that one disappointment he had with Vancouver, that he had not experienced elsewhere. Vancouver’s customer service sucks! Oooops, was that offensive? I should have said…. he felt that we are VERY lacking in the area of Customer Service. I share his feelings.

I had occasion to go to the Bay one afternoon. Taking my selection to the Cashier, there was a long line up at the only station that was open. An old lady was trying to pay for her purchase, but was just a little too slow in getting her cash out. The salesclerk looked like she would rather be somewhere else and grabbed the money from this customer’s hands as she finally manage to straighten and count out the bills from her purse. She made it very obvious that the old lady needed to just “hurry up and move along”. As each person in line got bullied, or rather, waited on, I could feel my stress level increasing and my spirit getting more and more agitated! When it was my turn, and I was the subject of her displeasure….. I suggested to her, quietly, that since she was so obviously unhappy here, that perhaps it is best she went home; or better yet, quit this job and find something more enjoyable for her. I was surprised when the people in the line behind me started to clap. Obviously, her rudeness did not go unnoticed by anyone!

Sadly though, this is not the first and only time that I have experienced this “I am doing you a favour here by waiting on you, so don’t expect me to like what I am doing” attitude from those in the service industry. Matthew agreed. Don’t get us wrong…… both Matthew and I are in the Service Industry. Perhaps it is why this behaviour is so appalling to us…..perhaps because we are affected by what is being reflected out there by the majority of us?

Customer Service 101 - Lesson 1: Smile…….. you are valuable, you are God’s child! Whatever is going on around you, however bad things get, know that you are a valuable being. God made you the way you are, and He loves you. You are precious to Him…..and so is the person in front of you, the person next to you, and the person behind you. And if God, the Supreme Being, loves you……what can life do to you, how can anything get you down? Happiness is guaranteed.

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them (the world), because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world”…….1John 4:4

Try Him………………………………………….or go further down the rabbit hole!
